Misophonia Rating: 10/10
This one sends my heart into fluttery panic mode hyperdrive hell.
It the sound of the ring being pulled on a soft drinks can. When my boss does this I feel particularly enraged.
For the split second as the ring is being pulled it feels like I’m being physically assaulted. As if someone has leapt inside my body and set off an explosion in my chest. My heart races ferociously while my mind desperately tries to rationalise what on earth is going on.
My brain then starts screaming: “it’s only a ring pull, calm down!”, but the body is in such a ludicrously exaggerated state of shock that my brain simultaneously goes into fury mode. It’s angry at being shocked and screams silently in the direction of the offender:
“What the HELL do you think you’re coin pulling that stupid 7,000 decibel ring pull? That stupid LOUD, smug gunpowder cracking, hissing sound is so @£*%ing self-indulgent. Do you realise other people here who have to listen to that? Do you realise that I thought I was being shot at?”
And then eventually it calms down. After a while. It’s a bit of a lingerer this one.
I’ve noticed that with some misophonia triggers. Some are absolutely unbearable during the trigger itself (like lip smacking) but then dissipate quickly after the sound stops. Others (like the ring pull sound) tend to be things that can haunt physiologically for several minutes afterwards.
This ring pull trigger is one of the more bizarre misophonia triggers, because it’s not a repetitive sound or noise. Does anyone else have this one or am I completely bonkers?
